The Toolsy 2018 Scholarship

May 30th, 2018

At The Toolsy, we believe in Craftship, which we define as having “great skill in creative endeavors”.

Some of us are woodworkers by trade, others writers. What we share in common is an intense desire to constantly hone and improve our craft, and to imbue everything we create with a distinct sense of style and stewardship.

We value creativity for its own sake, but if a creation betters the world around it, all the better.

Some people will argue that craftship is a dying art. Most people are knowledge workers, few people work with their hands, and style isn’t as important as scale.

Others argue that the internet has led to the commodification of skills and trades, and that a distinct sense of craftship is precisely what makes work stand out as unique in this age of digital noise.

We’d like to hear from YOU, and are prepared to offer a $500 scholarship (submitted by September 19, 2018) to the student (in high school or college) who best answers this question:

Craftship is as essential as ever in 2018. Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

We’ll announce the winner by the end of September, 2018, and will send them $500 USD via PayPal along with a heartfelt note of congratulation.

Please read the instructions below carefully and apply using the form at the bottom of this page:

  • Essay must be between 1000 and 1500 words
  • Your essay must be submitted by 11:59 PM on September 19th, 2018 to qualify

Essay Topics

Topic 1 – Financial Statements & Business Models

Understanding how to view and analyze a financial statement is one of the most fundamental skills necessary to succeed in business.

In 600 words, please tell us about a past business you have worked for and which financial statement you think is the most important to their business and why.

Feel free to refer to our Introduction to Financial Statement Analysis modules if you need to learn more or brush up on your financial statement basics.

Topic 2 – Should You Sue Your Customer?

Customers are the lifeblood of every business. We work day after day to find, attract, and retain our customers.

But what happens when the customer does not pay and you get stiffed with the bill?

As a B2B collection agency, The Kaplan Group sees these situations daily. Unfortunately, the alternative of going to court needs to be considered in many of the claims placed with our collection agency. Often times these neglected invoices can be collected without relying on the legal process, but unfortunately some of our clients eventually face the decision of whether or not to sue a customer that is long past due on payments.

To address this type of situation, we created a flowchart that answers the question: “Should you sue your customer?

Please review the flowchart and write 600 words telling us each of the following:

  • One situation where you SHOULD sue your customer.
  • One situation where you SHOULD NOT sue your customer.

In each scenario, explain what major factors you considered when determining whether or not to pursue a lawsuit.  Be creative – simply repeating what is in the flowchart will not result in a winning essay.

The 2019 Essay Topic –

Abraham Lincoln was one of our greatest Presidents. Prior to his election, Lincoln faced repeated personal and professional defeats and disappointments. As a young man, he had to work constantly to support his family. He failed in business, was engaged to be married but lost his fiancé to typhoid.
